The mystical story of Mount Lawu which was cursed by King Brawijaya
Mount Lawu is considered as one of the most haunted mountains and contains many stories about the whereabouts of the last Majapahit King Prabu Brawijaya V. Mount Lawu has three peaks namely Hargo Dalem, Hargo Dumiling and Hargo Dumilah which are believed to house two supernatural beings namely Dipa Menggala and Wangsa Menggala.
It is said that the two guardians were once ordinary people. They were the village chiefs at the foot of Mount Lawu who replaced Prabu Brawijaya V when he was exiled on the mountain. The people at the foot of the mountain tell their story from generation to generation. As Dipa Menggala succeeded King Brawijaya V, he became the ruler of Mount Lawu and was responsible for all supernatural beings. His territory was west of Mount Merapi, Merbabu, east to Mount Wilis; south to the South Coast; from the north to the north coast with the title Sunan Gunung Lawu. At the same time, Wangsa Menggala was appointed as his prime minister, Kiai Jalaki.
These three mountain peaks are sacred places in Java. For example, Hargo Dalem peak is believed to be the place of moksha (disappearance) of King Brawijaya V after converting to Islam.
Hargo Dumilah peak is a place of meditation for Kejawen followers. In addition, there is one area that forces people to climb Mount Lawu, namely Cepu Blora.
This taboo is said to have started when the exiled King Brawijaya V was chased by soldiers led by Adipati Cepu who wanted to capture him dead or alive. Read also:

In addition to the three peaks that are often visited by mountaineers, there are two places namely Sendang Panguripan and Drajat that are often visited by pilgrims. Sendang Panguripan is believed to have magical powers because the spring was created when King Brawijaya V used the spring while meditating on Mount Lawu.
Pilgrims usually use the water for ritual bathing as it is considered very potent. Pilgrims often perform this ritual at night with very cold temperatures.
